Rain wasn't enough to put the brakes on the eighth annual Greek Independence Day parade in Detroit's Greektown on Sunday.
Hundreds of people lined the streets to watch Pegasus floats, and more than 40 groups -- representing Greek Orthodox churches, cultural associations, dance teams and other organizations -- marched down the streets.
The Greek Orthodox Archbishop Demetrios was a key part of the event.
As a symbol of unity in the community, hands in the crowd held U.S. and Greek flags.
For some Detroit residents, such as Joan Alexander, the blue-and-white Greek flag was more than an accessory to go with her poncho.
"It's a sense of pride," she said. "In the Greek community, we're really close-knit, and this is a time for us all to celebrate our culture and independence."
Members of surrounding Greek communities came in costume to celebrate.
Not everyone in the crowd was Greek; some just came down for the fun.
"I wanted to bring my kids to see the floats," said Tim Workman of Dearborn Heights. "We visit Greektown a lot, so I thought this would be a good opportunity."
About 50 people stuck with the parade from its starting point at Woodward and Monroe.
Following the parade, a short cultural program was held near where the parade ended. The American, Greek and Canadian national anthems were sung to represent the countries' tight bond.
