Well maybe there is not a lot going on in Laganas to protect the turtles but in nearby Kalamaki there certainly is. At the entrance to the beach there is an observation platform manned by volunteers with binoculars keeping watch on what is happening on the beach. We are all warned not to place ourselves on the dry, soft sand parts of the beach as this is where the turtle eggs will be. Unfortunatly, this has only been in place for the last two years. Many turtles may have been lost before then. The ironic thing about it all is that I have been to Zakynthos 13 times (going again in May) and I have yet to see one loggerhead turtle! | |
