From the beginning of June through to the end of August, loggerhead turtles from different areas of the Mediterranean return to their nesting beaches to lay eggs. The females come ashore at night to lay eggs in the sand and then after covering the nest, return to the sea. The same turtles will return about a fortnight later to dig another nest and may repeat this process for a third or fourth time in the same season. In the 1970's I was fortunate to swim with a wild dolphin off the Cornish coast. Last year we watched humpback whales rolling and diving in the Samana area of the Dominican Republic as they came into the bay to mate. We were fortunate in that we visited Laganas in Zakinthos in mid May of this year just as the female turtles were getting ready to come ashore. Nowadays, Gr |
